Q&A with Matthew Mattson
Question #1: Why software engineering?
Answer #1:
I like to build.
There’s something incredibly fulfilling about seeing an idea evolve from nothing into something tangible and impactful, especially when it alleviates a pain point or solves a problem.
Growing up, I was always surrounded by technology, as my dad was a network engineer. While that exposure sparked my interest, it wasn’t until recently that I discovered my true medium: building with code.
Once I started, I realized I had a knack for creating front-end systems that function seamlessly, and leave users feeling delighted and inspired.
I thrive on the challenge of combining aesthetics with functionality to craft experiences that truly resonate with people.
Question #2: What are a few things that have made you successful thus far in your life?
Answer #2:
- Being disciplined with my time: I’ve learned to prioritize and manage my time effectively, ensuring that I can focus on what truly matters, both professionally and personally.
- Learning deep breathing exercises: Practicing mindfulness through deep breathing has helped me stay calm under pressure and maintain focus, especially during challenging situations.
- Having fun in life: I believe that balance is key – finding joy in small moments and maintaining a sense of humor have kept me motivated and grounded throughout my journey.
Question #3: If you had the opportunity to start your career over, would you do anything differently?
Answer #3:
I believe every success and failure has shaped me into who I am today, and I’m grateful for the journey.
While there may have been moments where I wished I’d taken a different path, those experiences taught me invaluable lessons that I carry with me. I’m happy with where I’ve ended up, and I appreciate the opportunities and growth that each step along the way has brought.
Question #4: Where do you look for motivation or advice?
Answer #4:
My number one motivation is my family.
They inspire me to push myself every day – not just to provide them with the best life possible, but also to be a role model they can look up to.
My second motivation comes from within: I strive to be the best version of myself every day. Settling for average isn’t in my nature, and that drive keeps me moving forward.
When it comes to advice, my dad is still my go-to. His wisdom and experience have guided me through so many challenges, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have him in my life. His perspective often reminds me of what’s truly important.
Question #5: Why did you decide to transition to software engineering?
Answer #5:
My decision to transition into software engineering stemmed from a lifelong interest in technology. I’ve always enjoyed building my own computers and network systems as a hobby, but the turning point came when my best friend told me he wouldn’t have made it through a coding class without my help.
That moment made me realize not only my aptitude for coding but also the potential impact I could have – both in the systems I build and the lives of the people who use them.
These experiences inspired me to pursue a BA in Computer Science at CSU and ultimately a fulfilling career in software engineering.
Question #6: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Answer #6:
Hopefully, relaxing on a beach with a drink in hand…
But realistically, I see myself stepping into a leadership role where I can leverage my experiences to drive meaningful change.
Whether it’s mentoring others, shaping innovative projects, or contributing to strategic decisions, I want to use the opportunities I’ve had to make a lasting impact in my field and on the people I work with.
Question #7: If you could give any piece of advice to someone reading this post, what would it be?
Answer #7:
Network, network, network. Whether you’re looking for a job or just trying to find the perfect patio set, the people you know can open doors and create opportunities you may not have thought possible.
Building and maintaining genuine connections is key to long-term success.
And once you’re on the right track, never stop learning.
The world changes quickly, and staying curious and adaptable will keep you ahead. More importantly, don’t just learn for the sake of it – apply that knowledge to whatever you’re doing as soon as possible.
That’s how you grow and truly make an impact.
